About The Hike
This is an adventure too easy to miss out on if you're ever in Sri Lanka. Mirissa and Welligama are some of the two most popular beaches on the eastern coast so both should be included in any good travel plan to the small island country.
The 'hike' or maybe rather the quick stroll down a main road, side road, back road, and then up a dirt path takes only several minutes from Mirissa Beach. Take the turn off the main drag of Matara Road onto Coconut Tree Hill Road and once it turns to gravel head up the hill.
The hill is located on private property but is available at no cost and can be accessed day or night. It's a popular tourist spot all day long and due to it's western facing view, it's especially crowded for sunset.
I ended up going for sunrise to avoid the crowds and was in the clear until just after the sun rose. The sunrise comes up along the coast behind the island but illuminates Coconut Tree Hill quite well making this a great time to visit and get crowd free pictures (otherwise don't expect to see what every influencer has posted from here).
